Air pollution is a pressing issue that leads to countless premature deaths each year. Therefore, monitoring air quality is crucial to safeguarding public health. Currently, governmental stations are the main source of air quality data. However, these stations often lack real-time data publication and have limited coverage, hindering the swift detection and analysis of local pollution peaks.
PlanetWatch offers a solution in the form of a global network consisting of both air quality sensors and environmentally-conscious individuals. By fostering widespread deployment of sensors, PlanetWatch aims to establish a comprehensive network capable of providing much-needed hyperlocal air quality data on a global scale. Participants in this network are encouraged to install sensors outside their residences or carry them while navigating cities or traveling, enabling the rapid implementation of low-cost, real-time sensing networks that effectively complement existing governmental infrastructure.
Indoor air quality monitoring follows the same principle. Planetwatchers have the opportunity to deploy sensors in their homes and generate valuable data. These data contribute to both protecting their families' health and facilitating scientific research.
